Clyda Rovers Successful 10th Anniversary Golf Classic
Clyda Rovers GAA Club held its annual Golf Classic at Mallow Golf Club last Thursday and Friday 15th and 16th June. It has become one of the main fundraisers for the club and it was held in beautiful sunshine on a fantastic course. It was the 10th anniversary of the event. At the prize giving on Friday night, John Roche, Chairman of the organising committee, commended the green keeper and his staff on the magnificent condition of the course. 97 teams participated in this year’s event and he thanked the companies and individuals who entered or sponsored teams for the Classic. Each year companies were being asked for more and more sponsorship and he emphasised how grateful Clyda were to all for their financial support year after year.
After the efforts on the golf course, each team were treated to an excellent meal in the clubhouse thanks to Swan Valley Catering. Thanks also went to the bar staff for their hard work over the two days.
Main sponsors for Golf Classics are hard to come by and John thanked Vincent Twomey of Twomey Industrial Services who was the main sponsor this year. Derry Murphy, The Railway Bar, Mourneabbey sponsored the longest drive and nearest the pin. The organising committee put a lot of hard work into the Classic and Noel Walsh, Chairman of Clyda Rovers, thanked them for it especially Mark Walsh a newcomer to the committee this year. Paul Cosgrave, Captain of Mallow Golf Club, also addressed the large attendance at the prize giving. Music on the night was provided by Donal Corkery and his traditional Irish musicians.
The over-all winner of the Classic was a team representing The Haven Bar, Killavullen comprising the Father and Sons Combination of Pat O Brien,Terry O Brien and Derek O Brien with a great score of 61pts.narrowly pipping the Mallow GAA and Anthony and Breda Kenny Teams .

Clyda Rovers GAA 10th Anniversary Golf Classic Launched.
Back in the Spring of 1996 when Clyda Rovers GAA Club began planning the inaugural Clyda Rovers GAA Golf Classic little did they think that 10 years latter it would be the highlight of the Clubs Financial and Social Calendar. This year the 10th Anniversary Classic takes place on Thursday June 15th and Friday June 16th in Mallow Golf Club. Over the past 10 years Clyda has seen remarkable success on the playing field winning 3 adult counties and Contesting a Cork County Senior Football Semi Final. But with success comes expense and the role of the Annual Golf Classic has become a vital part of the Club Finances On last Thursday Night last June 1st the 10th Anniversary Golf Classic was launched by the Club Officers, Organising Committee as well as the main Sponsor Twomey Industrial Services on the New State of the Art Playing Pitch in Mourneabbey. Both John & Catherine Roche have been the main organisers of the Classic since it began 10 years ago remarked that “ were really looking forward to the classic and we hope it will be biggest and best yet, on one of the top golf courses in the country, the aim is to have 100 teams and we hope with the support of the public to reach that ” Great thanks was also expressed that Vincent Twomey of Twomey Industrial Services agreed to be main sponsor. Vincent who is a former mentor and player of the club was delighted to lend his support to such a worthy event as the Clyda Classic “ I have been involved in many Clyda teams through out the years and I realise what a big effort it takes to run a club and I’m only happy to make my contribution on behalf of Twomey Industrial Services to the classic.” Likewise Chairman of Clyda Noel Walsh said that the club has a great organising committee “Like any Club in the Country Clyda suffers from the same Financial Pressures but when a Club like ourselves has such a committed Organising Committee headed by John & Catherine its really make a massive difference to the success of the Classic, it has got better and better ever year and we hope to have 2 fantastic days on the 15th & 16 of June”. Noel also added that everyone in the club is looking forward to the new pitch opening soon “The Club faces an historic year or two when teams will playing on the new state of the art all weather pitch and soon to be constructed dressing rooms , all members look forward with anticipation to great times ahead”.
If people wish to enter teams to the 10th Anniversary Classic they still have time. It is a 3 person team event (any combination) with an entry fee of €200. The Juvenile Club are also running a Draw in conjunction with the classic for Some very attractive prizes, tickets are on sale now from Juvenile Members as well as on sale on the 2 days in question.

LAST year’s beaten finalists Clyda Rovers got off to an impressive start to this year’s Hibernian Hotel Junior ‘A’ HC when they were easy winners over Harbour Rovers in the preliminary round at Killavullen on Saturday evening last.
James Murphy was in outstanding form for his side, accounting for 17 points over the hour.
The winners dominated from the start with Niall O’Mullane and Fergal Dorgan getting on top at midfield while in attack Pádraig O’Mullane, Paudie Kissane, Ray Carey and James Murphy were all very impressive.
The Mourneabbey side had five early points before Harbour Rovers had a goal in the tenth minute when Jim O’Brien finished a long free by Bill Sheehan to the net, 0-5 to 1-0.
James Murphy added two quick points before Brian O’Rourke had a point for the Glanworth side at the end of the first quarter.
From here to the break it was all Clyda Rovers and they added points from James Murphy (3), Padraigh O’Mullane and Ray Carey while Bill Sheehan had a late point for Harbour Rovers to see his side trail at the interval, 0-13 to 1-2.
On the changeover the winners did very well again and had three early points by the 35th minute to open up an 11-point lead.
Bill Sheehan and Colin Ronayne exchanged a point each by the 40th minute. Clyda Rovers added two more points.
Harbour Rovers hit their second goal of the game in the 46th minute when John Paul Cotter placed Jim O’Brien for his second goal, 0-19 to 2-3.
In a keenly contested last quarter Clyda Rovers added three more points from James Murphy while Harbour Rovers had points from John Paul Cotter and Bill Sheehan.
This impressive Clyda Rovers side now advance to the third round while Harbour Rovers will now meet Kilworth in the first round proper.
Over the hour Clyda Rovers struck 10 wide while Harbour Rovers were off target on 4 occasions.
